Seeing how we were all quite free (rotations only begin in July you see), we decided to go to the Italian Market Festival 2013 last weekend! The Italian Market in Philly actually opens 7 days a week and it's apparently the oldest outdoor market in the States!
So basically our seniors and some of the doctors we've met have recommended that we go check the place out as they sell lots of fresh raw produce at a cheap price! Awesome for cooking! ^_^
I guess the difference between the annual festival and the daily market is that there's a lot more people the weekend of the festival and a lot more alcohol being sold!
I'm not too sure if the prices of food and stuff are cheaper in conjunction with the festival or if they raise the price due to the increase in amount of people but I will make a comparison once I visit the Italian Market for some grocery shopping.
My #ootd ! I love my scarf! Got it with my mum in Malaysia!
The weather that day was pretty gloomy. It was drizzling (and apparently it rarely rains in Philly but so far, I've experienced rain quite a far bit!)! We were all supposed to go as a group of 6 but it ended up just being Tsung Wai, Huei-wen and me. -__- But we carried on!!!
The honey was amazing! I KID YOU NOT!!!! They had lavender infused honey!!!! And Cinnamon and blueberry and chocolate!!! T_T_T_T And they all tasted so good!! I really liked the lavender one but they cost about $8.50 for a small bottle and we didn't think it was an essential item to buy.. Boo.
Cute little tutu dresses for lil cutie pies!!
There were a lot of handmade jewelry sold that day!
Okay this was probably the COOLEST item sold that day! There was like a small crowd huddled around this canopy! You can make your OWN scarf!!!! Basically with the help of the guy in the checkered shirt, you draw your design that you would like to have on your scarf on that long vertical brown board with water (?)! I'm not sure what type of ink he uses or what the secret ingredient in the water was but it was cool! After you design your scarf, you stretch out the colorless piece of cloth that will be your scarf onto the brown board and place it ever so gently on your design!
Like so! and the designs just somewhat imprint onto the material! And TA-DA!!! He'll remove the cloth like after 1-2 minutes!!! And run some water over it and it's done!!! SUPER COOOOL!!!
I was so tempted to get one done BUT it costs $30 (!!!!) [that's about rm90+ if you're wondering] and I couldn't really come up with a design that was worth 30bucks at that point of time! >.<
What's an Italian market without ITALIA merchandise!
There were flowers too which I was very tempted to get as well to decorate my room! But I didn't.. Flowers die.. Money goes to waste..

This man was such a cute entertainer! He was dancing along with the music and was asking little kids to come dance with him! Such an adorable sight!!
Random pic of Huei-wen and I! ![]()
Italian Festival = pig out on Italian food!
So here we have an Italian Cannoli! They actually originated from Sicily! You guys must be thinking, "hmm that looks like some awesome ice cream filled inside some fried thingy!" But noooooo, it's actually a tube-shaped shell of fried pastry dough filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta (got that off wikipedia
). It's pretty sweet and quite nice actually.
Lots of pasta being sold that day!
This huge slice of pizza only costs $2!!! *steal*!
Okay I don't get it. This is called Tomato Pie and there were sooo many people buying it, walking around with it and eating it! But in my opinion, it doesn't even look that awesome. :x It just looks like some tomato sauce slapped onto a square cut piece of dough that looks kinda hard..
But then again, I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. I should probably try tasting it one day before placing judgment. So I take it back, tomato pie.
Lil cutie pies queuing up to get balloons!
My friend, Tsung Wai managed to capture this super cute moment! Look how eager she is to get her balloon and to pay the man. Nawwwwwww!!!!!!
Not for the faint-hearted. ![]()
Shared this pork sandwich to save room for more food!!
FUNNELCAKE!!!! It's basically just fried dough with LOTS of icing sugar on top. Kinda like a donut that's been shredded and re-fried? It was alright. Good for sugar cravings! But this isn't even Italian though!
Hehehe thought this was kinda interesting. Only ever seen this on TV.
When I first heard Oppa Gangnam style from a few streets down, I thought I was dreaming! Then I asked my friends if they heard it and they did! Turns out there was a band performing that song and she was even dancing to it!!! It's crazy how the Gangnam fad caught on all the way here!!!
Everything for a dollar. So Huei-Wen and I unleashed shopper mode.
But nothing caught our eye in the end anyways.
This was soooo good! I can't remember what it's called but it was Mexican food!!
We couldn't decide on whether to just have the hot sauce or the green sauce (I'm not even sure what's it made of cause the lady just said green sauce! >.< ) so we ended up with a mixture of both!
And lookie look!!! Looks super delicious rigghtttt?? It was!!! It had a citrus-y, fresh, a tinge of spicy and warmth from the roasted meat kinda taste….. *drools*
The only way the 3 of us could be in a pic without asking a random stranger to take it for us. Camwhoring ain't easy with a huge DSLR!!!! >.< All photos courtesy of Tsung Wai and his DSLR!
THINK FAST!!!!
What's the first thing that comes to mind?!
Nacho libre!
teehee.
As the Americans would say, "Have a great one!" ![]()
