DIY - Ombré nails for the new year!

As the saying goes “Sharing is caring”!

Hence, to start of 2013 and also my blog (I swear my blog has more lives than a cat! This is the 148139th time I’m ‘reliving’ it. >.< ) I’m going to share with you guys tricks to getting ombré nails without having to pay a lot for ‘em! I learnt this trick after watching a couple of YouTube videos a few days back and decided to give it a try!

Things you’ll need:

1. Nail polish – You have to use 2 colors or more for this. I’m not too sure bout using one color cause I’ve never tried it but if it works for you guys, let me know! Winking smile Both the nail polish I got are from Elianto and it was rm5-10 a bottle! I think.

2. A sponge – The sponge I’m using is from Daiso and it comes in a large packet of 10 or something like that. But let me warn you, when I used this sponge on my nails, I felt like small pieces of sponge were flaking off onto my nails so it gave it a textured look?

3. Scissors

4. Nail polish remover – To clean up the sides.. and everywhere else (in my case).

5. Clean nails! Rolling on the floor laughing

Firstly, you’ll need to cut the sponge into a size that can cover your entire nail. Try not to make it too big cause then it’ll be very hard to keep the nail polish within the confines of the nail. Don’t make it too small as well cause then you won’t be able to cover the whole nail with nail polish!

I, for one did a really messy job.

I got nail polish everywhere! And by everywhere, I mean…. everywhere.

Soooo. I got my sis to help me clean off the edges cause I was impatient and didn’t want to wait till they were completely dry to clean them up. Laughing out loud

Basically what you have to do is put on nail polish onto the sponge in any order you like but in a color gradient of your choice. I really wanted to do a rainbow themed one like the one in the tutorial I watched but I didn’t have the colors. So I did a pink-purple-blue one. It’s not toooo bad, right? Open-mouthed smile

Then just dab on the sponge onto your nails like so.

After the first dab, it will look like the color is too light and faded and it’ll feel like more varnish is getting absorbed into the sponge than on your nails. I felt like I had to use a lot of varnish because I kept recoating the sponge and redabbing (?) them onto my nails. But after 2 or 3 coats, it’ll look quite pretty! Thumbs up

If you inspect my nails very closely, you can see the unintentional ‘textured’ effect I was talking about earlier.

A tip for you guys: Try not to reuse the sponge too many times like what I did, to avoid ‘grainy’ nails. I used one sponge for all my nails. Or.. maybe it was the quality of my sponge. In the tutorial I watched, they used the triangle typed foundation sponge instead so maybe you can give that a try.
