Last Monday, my PBL (Problem-Based Learning) group mates and I went for a community clinic visit @ Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang. It’s this programme that all 3rd semester IMU students have to undergo. It basically gives us an opportunity to interact with real life patients and to have a clearer idea about how community clinics are managed. This visit’s actually kinda like my visit to Hospital Sg. Buloh for the AIDS Awareness hospital attachment. [click link to read all about it! :) ]
We will be going to Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang twice [the second visit is a few weeks from now] and IMU has set up a task for us- to clerk 4 patients [that is we have to ask the patients some questions and write down their case and hand it in to the Sisters in IMU]. So during my visit there, I managed to talk to a couple of patients and I realised one big problem. I need to learn Chinese. It’s just so sad how I can’t speak to the Chinese people who can’t speak English! :( But thankfully I can speak Malay if not I don’t think I’ll be able to communicate with anyone. –.- [So you guys who speak Chinese, when you see me, speak to me in Chinese k! Mandarin first la.. When I pro already, then can bombard me with Canto.. :p ]
Anyways, that’s not the point of this post. So while we were there on Monday, the doctor in-charged asked if any of us would like to help out with this programme they were having on the 16th and a couple of friends and I thought, ‘Hey, why not?’.
Which brings me to the reason for this post! To tell you bout the Health Promotion Programme @ Metroprima!
So basically, Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang will be holding weekly health checks at the Metroprima area. They will be held every Sunday and the check-ups are for free! :)
Experts will be there to help check your BMI, your blood glucose level…
and also your blood pressure level!
Not only that, they will be promoting pap smears for women!
Jennice, Juliana, Amelia and yours truly! :)
Children were also taught on the proper technique of hand washing and the importance of a balanced diet. What better way to start than with the young! ;)
Colouring competitions were also held to entertain the kids while their parents were undergoing check-ups!
My friends and I were in-charged of this section. Kids are shooo kyuutee! [Man, I think my maternal side’s kicking in.. >.< ] It was kinda disappointing that we couldn’t help out with the more medical work [bp taking, blood glucose check and the sorts] but they already had all the professional help they needed. Oh wells. We’ll get plenty of opportunity when we become doctors! :p
Amelia and Jun were in charge of the older kids. The teens had to answer a quiz regarding Dengue fever [some of which we ourselves didn’t know the answer to! >.< ]
All in all, it was a good experience. :) It made me realise the importance of health promotion among the public and I got to experience the health screening setting. It’s really nice how the clinic’s making efforts to carry out weekly checks for the community for free. Okay, maybe I’m just outdated but I didn’t know bout all these health checks. Maybe cause they don’t have it in my area. :S So guys, ‘Prevention is better than cure!’ Go get your health checked at nearby community clinics today! :)
